A 'playground for the imagination", this interactive science center provides fun hands-on exhibits that demonstrate how science affects everyday life. Visitors unravel the mysteries of motion with scientific experiments: Roll-A-Ball, Bernoulli Ball, and the hammer table. Science demonstrations are at 11:00am, 1:30 and 3:00pm on Saturdays, and include such topics as Creepy Crawlies, Combustion, Chemistry, Magic of Science, Snakes Alive, Kitchen Science, and Super Cold.

History, Science

The Grout Museum of History & Science's history collection focuses on the period from 1833, when Iowa was opened for settlement, to the present. The Maytag Car, 1915 Waterloo Boy, Rath Packing Company whistle and Pioneer Hall Mural help visitors envision and understand bygone eras. Planetarium shows are at 11:00am, 1:30 and 3:00pm on Saturdays.

The Marshall Center School, built in 1893, has been authentically preserved as it was c. 1920 when the rich tradition of education in Iowa took place at a one-room schoolhouse.

Designed as an interactive, participatory exhibition with an emphasis on art and culture, each exhibit immerses the audience in an atmosphere and environment representative of the particular subject being presented.

Historic House

Nestled in the heart of northeast Iowa is a small jewel of American mid-Victorian architecture. Completed in 1861, this lovely brick structure is one of the oldest homes in Black Hawk County. Guided tours allow visitors to step into an authentic Victorian interior, including original family belongings; make purchases in the Pie Safe Museum Gift Shop; and wander through picturesque Victorian gardens.

The 2025 AASLH Annual Conference, in partnership with Ohio Local History Alliance, will take place as the history field makes the final preparations to kickoff off the 250th commemoration of the founding of the United States.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future
