2019 SPOOM Conference - Society of Old Mills External Event Page
Dalton, Georgia
Venue: Historic Prater's Mill is hosting the 2019 SPOOM annual conference
The theme is Milling Around Old Cherokee Georgia. This northwest portion of Georgia was a part of the Cherokee Nation from about 1750 to 1838. While here, the Cherokee brought water-powered milling technology to the region. Even after the Cherokee left on the 1838 Trail of Tears, the area was still known as Cherokee Georgia for decades. ///// "While no Cherokee mills exist today, we will visit Dew's Pond Mill which is built on the site of a Cherokee mill," says Melanie Millican Chapman, president of the Prater's Mill Foundation, Inc. "At Red Clay State Historic Park, we will see the main bearing and a millstone fragment from the Brainerd Mission Mill build in 1820." ///// Participants will also visit mills built by pioneer settlers: Prater's Mill, Dennis Mill, Old Lindale Brick Grist Mill (tentative), and Yarborough Mill. Other mills to see are: Lee and Gordon's Mill, rebuilt after the Civil War; and Berry College Mill, built in 1930 by Henry Ford. ///// Join us for a conference that includes miller training, a banquet, and bus tours of interesting mills in the place the Cherokee called The Enchanted Land.

Country School Association 2019 Conference External Event Page
Adamstown, Maryland
Venue: Claggett Center
The Country School Association of America will hold its 2019 annual conference in Maryland—just outside our Nation's Capital—providing an opportunity to focus on country schools from a national perspective. These modest, decidedly local educational institutions that dotted the countryside were, of course, countrywide—with many similarities but also having important local, state and regional differences. We'll consider this local/national juxtaposition—still relevant today—at our June 2019 gathering.
