We are a statewide resource headquartered in the heart of Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood cultural district. Our museum features more than 1,000 objects on display in 15 permanent and rotating exhibition galleries. Our library houses 7 million books, documents, manuscripts, and photographs available for research and scholarship.

Montpelier Mansion

A fine example of Georgian architecture, popular in Maryland in the late 1700's, Montpelier Mansion sits on approximately 70 acres of beautiful parkland. Architectural and building construction details, as well as historical research, suggest that the house was constructed between 1781 and 1785. Major Thomas Snowden and his wife Anne, original owners of Montpelier Mansion, welcomed many distinguished guests into their home including George Washington and Abigail Adams.

Founded on October 24, 1984 by Chief Judge James F. Schneider, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Maryland, and Philip Sherman, Chair of the MSBA Senior Lawyers Section, the museum is filled with historical artifacts of Baltimore’s Bench and Bar. Managed by the nonprofit Baltimore Courthouse and Law Museum Foundation, Inc., the museum features a self-guided walk-through tour.
