The earliest history of Allerton Garden was intermingled with the upper part of the Lawa’i Valley that is now the McBryde Garden. Both were integral to the ahupua’a (land division) of Lawa’i. It was not until well after the arrival of the first Europeans in the late 1700s and the subsequent changes to the traditional Hawaiian way of life that the history of the lower Lawa’i Valley began to diverge from that of the upper valley.

Francis and Ann Marie Koenig first came to Calvert County in 1955 seeking a retreat from his career as an architecht/builder/developer in Washington, DC. They quickly fell in love with the area and in 1956 built a beach house in Long Beach. Soon they became avid sailors and could often be found heading out of Flag Harbor Marina on their sailboat, "Annmarie." They shared their love for the area with their family, taking their grandchildren for walks through the American Chestnut Land Trust on Parker's Creek.

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a world-renowned zoo, natural history museum and botanical garden, all in one place! Exhibits re-create the natural landscape of the Sonoran Desert Region so realistically you find yourself eye-to-eye with mountain lions, prairie dogs, Gila monsters, and more. Bacon’s Castle was originally home to a prosperous planter, Arthur Allen, and his family. Following Allen’s death, the house was inherited by his son, Major Arthur Allen II. A loyalist supporter of the colonial government and member of the House of Burgesses, Major Allen was driven from his house in 1676 by followers of the patriot rebel Nathaniel Bacon, whose uprising later came to be known as Bacon’s Rebellion. The episode later gave Bacon’s Castle its name though the house remained in the Allen family until 1844.

The Ann Norton Sculpture Garden is a complete unique experience in that you are visiting the home, studio and garden of the artist Ann Weaver Norton. The garden is a rare sculpture that was created to have you experience her monumental works in brick in a surprising and completely unpredictable fashion. Guests are encourage to wonder and explore, get lost and then come back and share there visit with the staff who answer all kinds of questions and provide you with a cool drink of water and share a story or two about the life of Ann. Our vision is to continue to share Ann's unique art and life. To work to preserve it for the enjoyment of the community as Ann had intented it to be.

The Annie Riggs Memorial Museum is open six days a week, and is located at the corner of Main and Callaghan (number 3 on the historical tour). Visitors can experience a thriving desert garden at the back of the museum, inviting benches on the wrap-around porches and an interior courtyard with a restored Pecos County buggy.

Each spring, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve comes alive with the seasonal surprises of the Mojave Desert Grassland habitat. The duration and intensity of colors and scents vary from year to year. The wildflower season generally lasts from as early as mid-February through May, with a variety of wildflowers creating a mosaic of color that changes daily.
