The Lee-Fendall House Museum presents the whole history of the site, from notable entrepreneurs of the late 18th century to labor leaders of the mid-20th century. The owners and the workers, enslaved and free, that gave the house its character. Come discover the Bicentennial Garden and the preserved home through tours, programs, and exhibits we discover our shared history as a community and as a nation.
The Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden interprets American history through the experiences of those who lived and worked on the property from 1785 to 1969. As an educational center, the museum preserves its historic resources to promote community engagement about the relevance of the past to our present.
The house was built in 1785 by Philip Fendall on land purchased from his cousin, Revolutionary War hero Henry Lighthorse Lee, father of Robert E. Lee. Generations of the Lee family lived in the house until 1903, except during the years that the Union Army seized the property to use as a hospital.
