Description

A Federal-period brick dwelling built in 1857 on land granted in 1758 to John Cooke in the region now known as Rock Creek. Today it houses offices of the Park and Planning Commission of Montgomery County.

Needwood Mansion is not open to the public except one event per year. You can walk the grounds and trails to Lake Needwood. There is an interpretive sign in front of the mansion.

Archaeology Day is an introduction to archaeology for all ages.

Archaeology Day features a public dig at Needwood Mansion with Parks Archaeologist Heather Bouslog and archaeology program volunteers. The day's activities also include tours of the Needwood Mansion, storytelling and old-time games and crafts. Be sure to bring a bag lunch and digging clothes

Educational Programs

The Archaeology Program identifies, manages, and interprets archaeological sites on parkland and provides opportunities to consider the effects of land use decisions on cultural resources.

Excavations contribute to public education programs, restorations, park development plans and mitigation of construction projects. The program provides for the stewardship of non-renewable archaeological resources and an opportunity for public participation in discovering our human past right in your back yard .

Since 1984, high school students have broadened their curriculum through our award-winning volunteer program. The Department of Parks provides projects in fieldwork and laboratory analysis and a fieldschool experience through our camps. Adults can also join in the fun through a cooperative venture with the Archaeology Society of Maryland Mid-Potomac Chapter.

CAM is hard at work planning for the 2025 conference, set to take place from February 18–22, 2025 in San Francisco. We look forward to highlighting best practices and innovative ideas from California's museum community

The California Association of Museums is excited to continue offering in-person programming for 2025. We will not be requiring proof of COVID vaccination/s, but highly encourage vaccination and boosters. For the health and safety of our colleagues, masks are also encouraged (but not required). Capacity and spaces will be thoughtfully considered in the planning of this event.
