Description

Marietta was the plantation home of Gabriel Duvall. He undertook the building of this modest Federal style brick house at about the same time he was appointed an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court in 1811, a position he held for twenty-three years. Only the Judge's law office and root cellar remain of the many outbuildings that originally supported the 650 acre estate. In the early 1830s, when Duvall became guardian to his grandchildren, a two story addition was built. Gabriel Duval (1752-1844) devoted over 60 years of his life to public service. He held many notable offices: as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, the United States Congress, the Maryland State Supreme Court, and as Comptroller of the United States Treasury. Throughout his distinguished career, he was regarded as a gentleman of the highest integrity. Marietta remained in the Duvall family until 1902. Today the house is furnished to reflect the period of the Duvall Family's occupancy and is open for tours to the public. A variety of special events and exhibits are also offered.

History

Marietta is situated on 25 acres of lawn and wooded acres. The Society of Maureen Duvall Descendants has relocated the family graveyard from a nearby area to serene surroundings at Marietta. The grounds boast two County Champion trees and lovely old boxwood.

Governance

Marietta is owned by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission and is operated by a division of the Parks Department.
